Rooibos Green Grape First Steps

A chilled drink with green grape, lemon, basil.

Rooibos Green Grape First Steps

Crushed green grapes give rooibos a mild sweetness, while lemon and basil make the finish more lively. The tea contributes a woody note that keeps it from tasting like simple grape water. Split the grapes thoroughly so their juice mixes in, then strain if you don't want pieces of skin. Use just a little basil; too much can make the glass feel savory. The result is a caffeine-free fruit tea with a surprisingly clean, lightly herbal finish.

Ingredients

  • 1 tea bag Rooibos tea
  • 6 oz Water
  • 1/4 cup Seedless green grapes, halved
  • 1/4 oz Lemon juice
  • 2 leaf Basil leaves

Make it

  1. Brew the tea in the measured water, using the temperature and steeping time on its packet. Remove the tea bag.
  2. Cool the tea in a heatproof container, then chill for about 30 minutes.
  3. Mash any soft fruit in a separate glass. Lightly bruise herbs or ginger; add these and the listed juices or spices to the cooled tea.
  4. Stir well and taste. Remove ginger or herb sprigs when their flavor suits you. Strain if you prefer a smoother drink, then serve chilled.
