Grapefruit Basil Breakfast

Grapefruit Basil Water. A simple recipe for the start of your day.

Grapefruit Basil Breakfast

Grapefruit and basil give this morning water a bright, slightly bitter character with a leafy scent. The basil makes an interesting change from rosemary’s woodier flavor, but it still needs a gentle hand. Bruise just a few leaves and stir them with the juice before adding water. If you enjoy grapefruit’s natural bitterness, there’s no reason to hide it; simply dilute until the strength feels comfortable.

Ingredients

  • 6 oz Cold water
  • 2 oz Grapefruit juice
  • 3 leaf Basil leaves

Make it

  1. Add the fruit and herbs to a glass. Gently press soft fruit or herbs to release their flavor.
  2. Stir in the juice, any optional salt or sweetener, and the water. If using sparkling water, add it last and stir once.
  3. Add ice if you like. Let infused water stand for 5 minutes for a fuller flavor.

Benefits

Grapefruit · a little vitamin C

The 2 oz of grapefruit juice adds some vitamin C for absorbing iron from plant foods, with basil rounding out the flavor.

Basil and grapefruit

The basil contributes a savory green fragrance to grapefruit, giving you a specific flavor combination to reach for instead of a default pour.

If your medicine advises avoiding grapefruit, choose a different recipe or check with your pharmacist.
