Espresso Orange Plot Twist
Bitter coffee, tonic and orange aroma in a bright morning highball.

Coffee and tonic sound like an unlikely pairing until the bitter notes meet. Espresso brings roasted depth, tonic adds a sharper edge, and orange peel provides aroma without turning the drink into orange juice. Pour slowly because the coffee can make the tonic foam. The first sip is brisk and distinctly bitter, with a citrus scent above it. This is an option for someone who enjoys espresso or grapefruit, rather than a sweet, creamy coffee drink.
Ingredients
- 1 oz Espresso, freshly brewed and cooled
- 5 oz Tonic water, chilled
- 1 strip Orange peel, washed, with little white pith
- 1/2 cup Ice
Make it
- Fill a tall glass with ice and add the chilled tonic water.
- Pour the cooled espresso slowly down the inside of the glass; it may foam briefly.
- Twist the orange peel over the glass to release its oils, tuck it in and stir gently before drinking.
Benefits
Coffee and orange peel · keep the flavor ritual
The coffee and orange peel combination gives you a roasted coffee flavor in a mixed drink built around its own flavors, keeping the familiar act of mixing and pouring while changing what goes into the glass.
Coffee · more than a sweet mixer
With orange peel in the glass, the measured coffee contributes a roasted coffee flavor as an accent to the fizz.
