Charred Grapefruit Morning Edge
A bittersweet grapefruit drink with a lightly browned citrus aroma.

Briefly browning the cut grapefruit gives its aroma a darker edge, while the juice stays recognizably tart and bitter. Rosemary adds a woody note that suits the citrus without needing much sweetness. Watch the pan carefully: light browning is useful, blackened fruit tastes burnt. A small amount of honey is optional if your grapefruit is particularly sharp. This is for people who enjoy the bitter side of citrus and want something less familiar than a straightforward grapefruit spritzer.
Ingredients
- 1/2 fruit Pink grapefruit
- 1/2 small sprig Fresh rosemary
- 5 oz Cold water
- 1/2 tsp Honey (optional)
Make it
- Place the grapefruit cut-side down in a hot, dry heavy pan for 2–3 minutes until lightly browned. Let it cool enough to handle safely.
- Squeeze and strain its juice into a glass, then stir in optional honey and lightly bruised rosemary.
- Add the cold water, chill for about 15 minutes and remove the rosemary once its flavor is noticeable.
Benefits
Grapefruit and rosemary · refreshing fluids
The 5 oz of cold water contributes to your day’s fluids, with grapefruit and rosemary providing the flavor that makes another glass appealing.
Grapefruit · a flavor worth noticing
Using grapefruit beside rosemary gives the glass a pleasantly bitter citrus edge, creating its own flavor without needing carbonation or an alcoholic pour.
If your medicine advises avoiding grapefruit, choose a different recipe or check with your pharmacist.
