WHY DO WE DRINK

Pause again for a second.
There isn’t one REASON. There isn’t one TYPE of drinker. And there definitely isn’t one STORY.
Your reasons are personal. They belong to you. But if we’re honest and examine it with a clear mind, there are patterns.
Most of us aren’t drinking because we’re reckless, or foolish, or lacking self-control.
We’re drinking because alcohol performs a job — multiple jobs.
And damn it, it performs them well
That’s what makes this a little tricky.
1. To “just breathe”
for a second.

Alcohol increases GABA — a calming neurotransmitter — which quiets the stress response. That first sip hits something different.
Here Are Some of the Common Overlaps:
2. To mark a transition.

Your brain builds habit loops around repeated cues. 5pm + drink becomes a neurological signal: “Work is finalllly done.”
3. Soften the edges.

Alcohol dampens the prefrontal cortex — the part responsible for self-monitoring and overthinking. Less internal chatter. Less friction.
4. Because it’s simply what we’ve done.

Dopamine releases not just from alcohol, but from anticipation and repetition and nostalgia.
5. To connect.

It lowers inhibition by suppressing control circuits in the brain. You feel more open, more fluid, less guarded.
6. “I deserve it!"

Alcohol spikes dopamine — the same chemical tied to motivation and pleasure. Your brain tags it as earned.
7. Because seemingly everyone else is drinking.

Humans are wired for belonging. Social conformity reduces perceived threat. It feels safer to participate than to opt out. l.
8. Honestly, because it works. Temporarily, of course.

Dopamine releases not just from alcohol, but from anticipation and repetition and nostalgia.
There’s no villain here.
And this is a ZERO judgement system.
The real question isn’t:
“Why would you drink?
Alcohol isn’t random in your life.
It’s FUNCTIONAL.
It Is
What If :
You kept the ceremony...but removed the friction?
You kept the reward…
without borrowing energy from the next day?
You kept the exhale…
without the 3:12am wakeup?
You kept the ritual…but stopped outsourcing your regulation to a substance?
You kept the transition…
without the negotiation tomorrow?
You could feel relaxed —
and still wake up clear?
You kept the connection…
without the subtle self-disappointment?
The job alcohol performs…
could be redesigned?
