"But why does alcohol feel so good?"
As soon as alcohol begins reaching the brain through the bloodstream, several systems shift in ways that can make drinking feel really good:


GABA
What it is: Your brain’s built-in brake pedal. Alcohol makes GABA work harder, slowing down some of the brain activity that keeps you tense, guarded, and overthinking.
How it feels: “Ahhh. There it is.” Your shoulders drop. Your brain gets quieter. You feel calmer, looser, and less self-conscious.

Glutamate
What it is: Your brain’s gas pedal. Alcohol temporarily suppresses it, turning down alertness, thinking, and mental noise.
How it feels: “My brain finally shut up.” Things feel slower, easier, and less important.

Dopamine
What it is: Part of your brain’s reward-and-motivation system. Alcohol can produce a dopamine bump that tells your brain: this was worth doing.
How it feels: ““Okay…this is fun.” A little lift. More excitement. More interest. And the beginning of wanting another.

Endoprhins
What it is: Your brain’s natural feel-good chemicals. Alcohol can trigger their release, adding warmth and pleasure to the experience.
How it feels: “I just feel good.” Warmer. Happier. More comfortable. More connected to the people around you.

Prefrontal Cortex
What it is: The part of your brain doing the planning, judging, inhibiting, and “maybe I shouldn't” thinking. Alcohol starts turning its influence down.
How it feels: “Screw it.” Less analyzing. Less worrying what people think. Things you'd normally second-guess suddenly seem like a great idea.
So alcohol didn't create that good feeling out of nowhere.
It changed the chemistry of your brain in several directions at once.

BECAUSE THE BRAIN LOVES, WANTS, & NEEDS BALANCE .
In short: What goes up, must come down.
As alcohol begins wearing off, your brain starts pushing those systems back toward balance—and the same chemistry that helped you feel really good can now make you feel really bad:

Glutamate (the return of)
What it is: Remember him? Alcohol had been holding down your brain’s gas pedal. As alcohol wears off, that suppression disappears—and your brain can temporarily feel too switched on.
How it feels: “Why am I wide awake?” Restless. Wired. Thoughts moving again. That peaceful, slowed-down feeling starts disappearing.

Cortisol
What it is: One of your body’s major stress hormones. As your system works to regain balance, cortisol can rise—essentially turning the stress volume back up.
How it feels: “Why do I suddenly feel anxious?” Uneasy. Edgy. Tense. Sometimes there isn't even anything specific you're worried about—you just feel off.

Adrenaline
What it is: Your body's rapid-response alarm chemical. It prepares you to act: heart rate up, energy mobilized, body more ready for action.
How it feels: “Why is my heart pounding?” Jittery. Sweaty. Physically restless. That tired-but-somehow-wired feeling when all you want to do is sleep.

Norepinephrine
What it is: A brain-and-body alerting chemical involved in attention, arousal, and the stress response. As alcohol's sedating effects disappear, that alert system can become much more noticeable.
How it feels: “Why can't I shut my brain off?” Alert when you don't want to be. Hyper-aware. Easily startled. Thoughts bouncing around at 3:17 in the morning.
